A Breath of Fresh Air

Bad Breath Clinic

Bad breath can make anyone feel self-conscious but it’s also a very common complaint that can affect just about everybody. Luckily, there are plenty of techniques and products available- both in our practice and for use in the comfort of your own home- that will have you breathing a sigh of relief.
The Basics of Bad Breath Prevention

In essence, bad breath is caused by sulphides produced by bacteria in the mouth. The obvious way to get rid of the bacteria is by a thorough cleaning by the dentist or hygienist who can also spot any areas of your mouth especially susceptible to bacterial growth, for example impacted wisdom teeth or a deep pocket in the gum.

Our oral hygienist will cover the many aspects of effective tooth and tongue brushing and flossing, including the use of a Tepe brushes which are specially designed to clean larger gaps.

Your dentist or hygienist may also prescribe an effective mouthwash to help eliminate the problem.

In a small number of cases, bad breath can be caused by acid reflux from the stomach and your dentist may refer you to your GP.

Frequently Asked Questions

GOOD TO KNOW

I HAVE BAD BREATH OFTEN. IS THIS UNUSUAL?

Bad breath is a common complaint and one which can make the sufferer very self-conscious. However, persistent bad breath (or halitosis) can affect many people- especially those who are middle aged and older. Our dentist can help find the source of the problem and recommend an effective treatment.

DOES MY BAD BREATH COME FROM MY MOUTH?

Most likely, yes, but bad breath can sometimes be caused by a sinus infection or some other foreign body such as pus from the tonsils and sometimes by disease. If you’re worried about your breath our dentists can help find the cause.

WON’T BREATH MINTS SOLVE MY PROBLEM?

Breath mints may smell and taste nice but really they only mask the source of the problem. If you regularly suffer from bad breath we believe it’s best that you speak to one of our dentists. They can find out what’s causing it and have many ways to treat it such as hygiene instruction, a professional cleaning or treatment for gum disease and/or tooth decay.
